27 October 2008 - from 2 pm to 5 pm

at Kulturministeriet, Nybrogade 2, 1203 Copenhagen K

(Store Mødesal)

The Danish Ministry of Culture and the Danish Sports Law Association cordially invite you to participate in a Sports Law Seminar on The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and its role in international dispute resolution in sports cases. The seminar will be conducted in English.

The seminar will hopefully provide a useful insight as to how CAS functions in a sports world with huge economic and political interests at stake. What is the background, purpose and mandate of CAS, what jurisdiction does CAS have, how are the arbitrators selected, what is the procedure involved in a CAS arbitration, and how fast can an award be obtained? Apart from these practical issues, the seminar will also try to focus on the importance of CAS’ jurisprudence as a new “lex sportiva” and the significance of CAS in international sports disputes now and in the future.

To present and discuss these issues we are very pleased to welcome the members of the panel of the seminar:

Matthieu Reeb:

Matthieu Reeb is the Secretary General of CAS in Lausanne, where he has worked for over a decade. He is a Swiss lawyer with a vast experience in all sports law areas.

Jorge Ibarrola:

Jorge Ibarrola is a Swiss lawyer, who has a private law practice in Lausanne specializing in sports law cases. In 2003, he joined the CAS at the time that FIFA granted CAS the jurisdiction to rule on its disputes. He has handled more than 400 arbitrations, and is now one of the most frequently used lawyers to appear before CAS.

Lars Halgreen:

Lars Halgreen is an attorney-at-law in Copenhagen and a partner in the law firm of Johan Schlüter. He is chairman of the Danish Sports Law Association and has taught international sports law at the University of Copenhagen since 1998 and holds a Ph.D. in international sports law. He has been a CAS arbitrator since 2004.
